A SEP IRA is an investment option for the self employed to save for retirement. A self employed individual can make contributions to a SEP IRA based on the income that they earn in their business. For 2018, the maximum contribution limit is $55,000. Investment decisions are made by the owner and the owner has full control of the account. Contributions to a SEP IRA are federally tax deductable. The rules are complicated.

What are the tax benefits? The contributions are federally tax deductable. The earnings on the SEP IRA are tax deferred. Retirement distributions are taxable when you may be in a lower tax bracket. There are penalties for early withdrawal, subject to certain exceptions. Setting up a SEP is easy and there are no filing requirements. Give Lenny a call for more information.
